Install OpenTodo on iPhone and iPad
OpenTodo is a web app you install from your server's address, in Safari. There is no app store involved. Once installed it has its own icon, opens in its own window, starts without a connection, and updates by itself when your server is updated. Installing the app
Before you start
Sign in to your OpenTodo address in the browser once. Installing needs a secure address, one that starts with https://. If the browser offers no install option at all, ask whoever runs your server to set that up; the troubleshooting page says what they need to do.
Install it
- Open your OpenTodo address in Safari and sign in once.
- Tap the Share button, the square with an arrow pointing up.
- Scroll down, tap Add to Home Screen, then Add.
OpenTodo now has an icon on your home screen. Open it from there from now on. Recent iOS versions also offer Add to Home Screen from other browsers; if you do not see it, use Safari. Steps in the docs
Get reminders on this device
Reminders while the app is closed need iOS or iPadOS 16.4 or later and work only in the installed app, not in a Safari tab. Open it from the home screen, then turn on notifications in Settings → Notifications inside the app and send a test notification. Notifications
Save a page as a task
Safari does not offer web apps in its share sheet. To save a page as a task on an iPhone, use the bookmarklet from Settings → Capture. Capturing pages · The extension, the share sheet and the bookmarklet
Offline, updates and removing it
The installed app keeps a full copy of your tasks on the device, so you can add and complete tasks without a connection and it syncs when you are back online. Keep using it offline
When your server is updated, the app fetches the new version in the background and switches to it on its own. If something still looks old, close the app completely and open it again. Updates
Remove it the way you remove any app on that device. Your tasks stay on your server. Signing out from Settings → Account clears the copy on that device, after uploading any change that has not reached the server yet. Remove it
Not on a server yet?
Try the demo in your browser first. When you like it, run it on a server you already have.
