Install OpenTodo on Mac

OpenTodo is a web app you install from your server's address, in Chrome, Edge, or Safari on macOS Sonoma or later. There is no app store involved. Once installed it has its own icon, opens in its own window, starts without a connection, and updates by itself when your server is updated. Installing the app

Before you start

Sign in to your OpenTodo address in the browser once. Installing needs a secure address, one that starts with https://. If the browser offers no install option at all, ask whoever runs your server to set that up; the troubleshooting page says what they need to do.

Install it

  1. Open your OpenTodo address and sign in once.
  2. In Chrome or Edge, click the install icon at the right end of the address bar, or open the browser menu and choose Install OpenTodo. In Safari, choose File → Add to Dock.
  3. Confirm with Install (or Add).

OpenTodo opens in its own window and gets an entry in your Dock and Launchpad. Firefox does not install web apps, but OpenTodo works fully in a Firefox tab, offline included. Steps in the docs

Get reminders on this device

Open Settings → Notifications in the app, turn on notifications for this device and send a test. If the test says accepted but nothing shows, check System Settings → Notifications for your browser, and Focus modes. Notifications

Save a page as a task

Support for receiving shares in the installed app varies by macOS version. The bookmarklet from Settings → Capture and the browser extension work everywhere. Capturing pages · The extension, the share sheet and the bookmarklet

Offline, updates and removing it

The installed app keeps a full copy of your tasks on the device, so you can add and complete tasks without a connection and it syncs when you are back online. Keep using it offline

When your server is updated, the app fetches the new version in the background and switches to it on its own. If something still looks old, close the app completely and open it again. Updates

Remove it the way you remove any app on that device. Your tasks stay on your server. Signing out from Settings → Account clears the copy on that device, after uploading any change that has not reached the server yet. Remove it

Not on a server yet?

Try the demo in your browser first. When you like it, run it on a server you already have.

OpenTodo is free and open source, with no paid tier. If it helps you, a star on GitHub helps other people find it, and a coffee helps keep it going.
