The formatting row

The task panel with formatted notes under the title and the comments below.

On this page

The formatting row is a row of buttons above a note or a comment: Bold, Italic, Link, Bullet list, Checklist and More, which holds the rest of what the editor can do (see Format notes and comments). A button in the row keeps your selection, and you keep typing in the text after it.

On a phone#

The row sits above the text while you write, and goes away when you leave the text.

On a computer#

A small Formatting button (the bold B) sits at the top right corner of a task's or a project's note. It appears when you point at the note or move into it with the keyboard. Press it and the row stays above the note, whether you are typing in it or not; press it again to hide the row. The comment box has the same Formatting button next to its @ button.

Whether the row is shown is remembered on each computer, separately for notes and for comments, so you can keep it in notes and leave comments plain. Notes you can only read have no button.

From the keyboard#

  • Shift+Tab from a note reaches its Formatting button; Enter or Space presses it.
  • Tab then moves into the row, which is a single stop: ← and → move between its buttons, Home and End go to the first and the last, and ↓ opens More.
  • Esc goes back to the text with your selection.

There is no shortcut for the button itself: every command has its own key or is in the / menu.

Turn the button off#

If you never want it, turn off Formatting button in Settings → Account → Profile → How you work. It applies to all your devices. The shortcuts, the formatting you type and the / menu keep working, and phones keep their row. Turned on again, the button comes back as you left it.
